50402-500x368In addition to being to the oldest and most important spa town in Europe, Abano Terme is also has an abundance of places that are of cultural and historical interest. The major attractions that can be easily visited on foot are:

SQUARE OF THE SUN AND PEACE (PIAZZA DEL SOLE E DELLA PACE)

Also known as the Square of the Sundial, it is famous for its magnificent sundial made from multicoloured marbles, and is one of the largest in Europe (3,000 square metres) and undoubtedly totally unique.

CATHEDRAL OF ST. LAWRENCE (DUOMO DI SAN LORENZO)

The Cathedral of St. Lawrence is the city centre’s major religious structure. It dates from second half of the 10th century, but this actual layout is from the 18th century and is the work of the architect Domenico Cerato.

MONTIRONE CIVIC GALLERY AND MUNICIPAL ART GALLERY

The Montirone Civic Art Gallery and the Municipal Gallery of Contemporary Art are housed in two buildings located to the side of the monumental entrance of Montirone – an ancient spa, and are linked by a neoclassical colonnade. They contain a huge collection of works of art from the Roberto Bassi Rathgeb Collection.

Amleto and Donato Sartori INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE MASK

The only one of its kind in the world, this museum houses the works of Amleto Sartori and his son, Donato – internationally renowned artists and creators of masks used in the Commedia dell’Arte and for the theatre in general.

MONASTERY OF ST. DANIEL

Monastero-di-San-Daniele-C01This delightful monastery, that sits on top of a small hill, can be reached on foot from Abano by following the appropriate pathway. The original monastery building dates from as early as 1086, but was modified in the 14th century.

ROMAN EXCAVATIONS AND THE OLD SPA OF MONTIRONE

In Roman times Montegrotto Terme was hugely important as a spa. The significance given to it by the city in this respect is still apparent today through the Roman excavations along the city’s main road, and the finds at the Hotel Neroniane.
